far as possible by the Public Works Department it

would appear from subsequent reports that the cable is

still not working properly and that it requires a thorough

renovation. This would involve a very heavy outlay and it

has been suggested that it would prove more economical to

substitute a Wireless Installation; I am in communication

with the Naval Authorities with regard to the establish-

-ment of such an installation.

As stated in my Despatch No. 277

of the 16th. November last various complaints appeared

during the year in the publie press on the subject of the

China Coast Meteorological Register. It is now being in-

-proved in accordance with certain recommendations of the

Chamber of Commerce.

I have further, on the representa-

-tion of the Chamber as to the paucity of available in-

-formation regarding Fogs on the China Coast, caused the

appendix on Fogs to be added to the Report now submitted.

5.

A new system of Storm-signals

consisting of a drum, cone and ball has recently been adopt

-ed on the China Coast in place of flag-signals, and was

introduced
